Jean van Lierop

After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch in 1999, Jean worked in private practice in the Netherlands and United Kingdom. Returning to South Africa, he achieved his Postgraduate Diploma in Aesthetic dentistry at the University of Western Cape (Cum Laude) and is currently completing a Masters in Restorative Dentistry.

Jean is passionate about modern adhesive techniques and aesthetics in dentistry. The use of modern materials in a minimally invasive approach has led to a special interest in preventative and restorative dentistry related to erosion and abrasion. This is a topic he has presented at conferences around the world.

He played an integral role in the founding of the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (SAAAD), and currently serves on the executive as vice president. He is also member of the International Team for Implantology. He helps support the South African dental community through his ongoing involvment in training and education courses.

Jean joined his colleague Ivonne Meyer to initiate Uhuru Smile, a fundraising drive to create awareness and raise funds for the Smile Foundation. A five-member team summited Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak raising R150,000 to operate on children born with cleft lip and palate deformities. He was also the instigator behind The Mad Run, a 280km trail run across Table Mountain in aid of the Miles for Smiles foundation for children born with facial deformities. He keeps himself out of trouble by completing numerous triathlons, multiday trail runs and mountain biking events. His latest challenge is canoeing.
